Smart Hydrogen Energy District (SHED) is a living laboratory for city-scale climate action developed and managed by MéridaLabs at UBC. SHED is transforming a city block into an integrated energy system that provides zero-emission power from sunlight and hydrogen, fuels vehicles, powers buildings, and explores energy storage and grid optimization solutions. As North America’s first test bed for integrated energy system design at the city scale, SHED links electrical and gas grids and turns passive assets like pipelines, vehicles, and buildings into active participants in city-scale energy transactions.
The SHED platform is designed to define the next generation of integrated urban services, linking energy, transportation, telecommunications, and urban design. Its control centre enables dynamic energy monitoring and forecasting for the built environment, while creating opportunities to test electric and hydrogen vehicles, digital technologies, and other innovations that support connected and autonomous mobility. In this way, SHED helps de-risk innovation and advance policies, technologies, and partnerships that enable an equitable society and a low-carbon economy.
SHED also links two narratives — technology and people. Through this integrated approach, it provides a space to gather, engage, and think deeply about the way we want to live, while creating a platform for clean growth, urban planning, and climate solutions that can be deployed in cities and countries around the world.
