At UBC, there are multiple research centres and operational units involved in the diverse range of Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) projects. In addition, UBC partners with a wide range of external organizations from the public sector and private industry. Our listing below provides a brief snapshot of each partner, and links for further information.

The Urban Innovation Research team in UBC’s Sustainability Hub is in the early stages of revitalizing and restructuring Campus as a Living Lab as a mechanism to more effectively to address complex sustainability challenges and increase the real-world impacts. As part of this process we are continually identifying groups already working in a living lab approach, and expanding the range of collaborators for future projects.

With a focus on climate, biodiversity, resilient communities, and circular economy the Hub’s programs and initiatives advance sustainability education, engagement, communication, and policy implementation across UBC’s strategic goals.

Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS)
Student Housing and Community Services administers accommodation for over 13,000 students at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. SHCS also oversees operations for UBC Bookstore, Campus Mail, Child Care, Conferences and Accommodation, Food Services and Parking.

Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS) at the UBC Farm is a research centre and local-to-global food hub working towards a more sustainable, food-secure future by supporting agroecology research and education.

Infrastructure Development provides stewardship for all institutional facilities projects, with units dedicated to Facilities Planning, Project Services, Project Planning and Business Systems, Asset Replacement and Improvement, and Capital Planning and Strategic Project Development.

is a team of experts in sustainability, planning, design, engagement, and community building dedicated to building a vibrant and sustainable campus to create healthy learning and living environments.

Biodiversity Research Centre

supports research, education and outreach in ecology, evolution, and conservation of biological diversity at all levels, from genes to ecosystems to human social interactions.

Centre for Plant Research and UBC Botanical Garden

support education, research conservation, community outreach and public engagement with native plants of British Columbia, as well as temperate plants and ecosystems from around the globe. They are housed within UBC’s Faculty of Science.

 

Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP)

is Canada’s centre for education, training and technical assistance for the wood products manufacturing industry. It supports high quality education, technical training, applied research and product development for academia and industry.

 

Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS)

at the UBC Farm is a research centre and local-to-global food hub working towards a more sustainable, food-secure future by supporting agroecology research and education.

 

Clean Energy Research Centre (CERC)

is Canada's largest federal research and development organization advancing knowledge and leading-edge technologies to find creative, relevant and sustainable solutions to current and future economic, social and environmental challenges.
