A unique space for testing real-world solutions

From 2022 to 2024, UBC Okanagan’s Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) program offered faculty and staff a unique opportunity through its annual CLL Fund Competition to incubate, test, and demonstrate innovative research in real-world settings. Projects were embedded within the campus environment—including buildings, infrastructure, streets, and open spaces—or in surrounding communities. Each initiative was co-led by a UBC Okanagan faculty member and an operational staff member, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and advancing impact in priority areas. The UBC Okanagan CLL Fund Competition is now closed.

Improve the Efficiency of the Energy System for the Campus’s Legacy Academic Buildings

This project focuses on optimizing energy efficiency in UBC Okanagan’s legacy buildings through innovative and cost-effective modeling, improving the district energy system to cut greenhouse gas emissions and set a scalable example for sustainable building practices.

Clean UBC Okanagan’s Air through Wall-mount Air Filtering Devices

A pioneering project that seeks to improve indoor air quality through the use of innovative wall-mounted Aerosol Removing Tapestry (ART) devices. These units effectively reduce harmful airborne particles and pathogens while improving energy efficiency. The project evaluates their performance, with potential applications in diverse settings such as classrooms, homes, and hospitals, extending beyond UBC Okanagan.
