UBC Vancouver Campus as a Living Lab Fund switches to two-year funding model

The UBC Sustainability Hub is pleased to provide an update on the recent activities and accomplishments of the Vancouver Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) Fund competition, and announce an upcoming switch to a two-year funding model.

Since inception in 2020, the annual CLL Fund Competition has enabled faculty and staff to co-create and co-deliver projects that advance sustainability research, innovation, and real-world learning. We have supported 17 unique projects at UBC Vancouver, addressing critical challenges related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), the climate emergency, sustainable places and communities, health and wellbeing, and more. These projects involve cross-disciplinary collaborations across more than nine academic departments and over fifteen operational units at UBC.

A new two-year competition model starts in 2025

As part of an evolving approach based on feedback from faculty and staff, Campus as a Living Lab, managed by the Sustainability Hub, will not hold the annual UBC Vancouver CLL Fund Competition in 2024.

Instead, we will launch a new two-year competition cycle beginning in September 2025. This new model will support a larger pool of funding, providing each project with more substantial financial support and extended timelines for implementation.

Why the change?

This new competition format reflects our commitment to fostering more ambitious projects with significant impact.

By offering more funding, time, resources, and the CLL team’s dedicated support and engagement, we aim to provide project teams with greater opportunities to conduct broader and deeper research, build stronger collaborations, and achieve more meaningful and impactful outcomes.
